Liz Ainslie

Liz Ainslie creates abstract work which is inspired by observations and memories like 1970s interior decor, natural landscapes, My Little Pony, and ancient Greek wall paintings. Liz derives a visual vocabulary from her memory of momentary perceptions. The titles are extractions from ambiguous snippets of speech. She listens to the radio or people's conversations, isolating phrases and separating the words from their original context. This process mimics her painting practice as abstractions are formed from abbreviations, clipped motion, and interrupted horizons. The greys, mauves, and browns mixed are the colours of fleeting natural light.

Perceptual curiosity is the seed of Liz’s work. In summer she immerses herself in a natural landscape to make observational drawings. The artist will then rework these observations in her studio, using photographs of architectural surfaces and patterns as an additional reference. Ainslie’s studio activity is energized by mixing oil colours on the palette. In addition to observational colour, she pluck hues from childhood memories.
