Nai-Jen Yang

Nai-Jen Yang experiments with surface as the utmost important element in her practice. By painting on canvas that has only been primed with rabbit skin glue, Yang aims to create a viewing experience that can only be fully understood by witnessing the works in person.

Through repetitive use of simple gestures, a subtle palette and the texture of the canvas, Nai-Jen produces marks that slowly cover the entirety of the canvas’ surface in its purest form. These marks are often invisible and only emerge when the viewer allows themselves time to study the paintings. These marks continuously change as they react to the surrounding light and the viewers themselves, creating an experience where the paintings constantly evolve as the viewer looks on.
