Jen Hitchings

Jen Hitchings’ work depicts surreal, natural environs in monochromatic colour and graphic quality. The spaces, while imagined, reference Jen’s personal experiences within and deep longing for the woods of the American Northeast. Her influences range from the rural Japanese landscape, the Hudson River School painters, science fiction film posters, spiritualist archetypes, and contemporary surrealist painting. While Hitchings’ work has always investigated the tenuous relationship between humankind and nature, in recent years she has embarked on a deeply self-reflective investigation of the psyche, relationships, erotic desire, and cosmic forces. Natural and internal worlds convene in each painting from places she’s experienced between living on the east and west coasts, and emotional spaces she finds herself in those times. Elements such as uncanny symmetry, unnatural patterns, and reflections that are only partially realistic coexist in each work with the intent of illuminating the simultaneous beauty and mystery of nature. What is considered true and what is not is called into question, ultimately resulting in an investigation of perception.
